EMMA (CUMMINGS) SCRIPPS

Emma Scripps

Died, at Chicago, September 9, 1894, Mrs. Emma Cummings Scripps, wife of William Scripps, aged forty-three years. Funeral services were held at the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Cummings, at 2 o’clock p.m., Tuesday, September 11, 1894.

Miss Emma C. Cummings, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Cummings, was born in Astoria township in 1851. December 29, 1880, she was united in marriage to Wm. Scripps, Jr., to which union was born one child — Miss Wayne — who with the husband survive her. For six years she has been an invalid and at times a great sufferer. She has traveled to almost every climate in the United States in hopes of obtaining relief and the most skilled physicians were employed, but none were able to effect a permanent cure. Some weeks ago she was taken to Chicago and placed under the care of an eminent physician but all this was of no avail and she gradually grew weaker until death relieved her of all suffering. She was beloved by many, and all who knew her admired her for her gentle and kind disposition.

The funeral occurred at the home of her parents Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Elder D. E. Hughes, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Astoria cemetery.
