MARTHA ELIZABETH (DORSETT) COX ROYER

Martha Royer

Martha Elizabeth Dorsett Cox Royer, 96, of Macomb, formerly of Rushville, died at 1:40 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Elms Nursing Center in Macomb.

She was born Nov. 20, 1903, in Brooklyn Township, Schuyler County, a daughter of William Elsworth and Lillie Ellen Hedgcock Dorsett. She married Willis L. Cox on Oct. 24, 1930, near Brooklyn. He died Sept. 6, 1951.

She later married Cecil Royer on Nov. 20, 1956, in Table Grove. He died July 5, 1994.

She also was preceded in death by one sister.

Surviving are one son, David (and Karen) Cox of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter, Marian Cox (and Wilbur) Kindhart of Rushville; two stepsons, Gordon (and Betty) Royer of Astoria and Raymond (and Nancy) Royer of St. Louis; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

She had taught at Union grade school and had taught high school in Adair, Smithfield and Littleton. She later taught junior high school in Astoria, retiring in 1970. She helped senior citizens thru the Agency for Aging's outreach program in central Illinois.

A graduate of Western Illinois State Teachers College in Macomb, she earned a bachelor of education degree in English and history. She was a member of Alpha Epsilon chapter of Kappa Delta Pi.

She was a Past Worthy Matron of Lauren Star Chapter Order of Eastern Star in Table Grove.

While a Rushville resident, she taught the Beacon Light Sunday school class at Rushville United Methodist Church.

She was a member of Woodland Church of the Brethren in Astoria.

Services were held Monday at Worthington Funeral Home with David Haney and Rev. Scott Henley officiating.

Burial was in Harris Cemetery in Table Grove.
