Raymond Rahrig

Raymond M. Rahrig, 84, of Ovid Township, died Wednesday, June 12, 1996, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Mich.

He was born on March 1, 1912, in Payne, Ohio, a son of William and Nellie Lyons Rahrig. On Sept. 14, 1944, he married the former Anna Trone in Coldwater. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Jerome Rahrig of Coldwater and Eldon Rahrig of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

He was skilled at working with sheet metal, a trade he learned as part of the family business in Payne, Ohio. He used these skills during World War II, where he worked at Bendix in the Detroit area and met his future wife, Anna. In 1946, he moved to Coldwater and worked for V.D. Norman. In 1950, he began working with the State Highway Department. Mr. Rahrig retired from that position in 1972. He also successfully owned and ran “The Mink Ranch” on Calkins Road. After retirement, he began breeding and raising rabbit beagles and many of his dogs gained national acclaim. He was an excellent shot and loved hunting, as well as fishing. In 1958, Mr. Rahrig earned 10th place in the Grand American Trap Shooting Competition. Another hobby was playing the guitar. As an active mason and shriner, he belonged to Tyre Lodge 18 in Coldwater, York Rite Masons, Jacobs Commandery, Knights Templar, Scottish Rite and Moslem Shrine Temple in Detroit.
