He was born May 5, 1953, in Roswell, N.M., a son of Lois J. Horwedel Wharton.
Surviving are his mother, Lois J. Wharton of Vermont; and one brother, Kevin (and Patty) Kirkbride of Table Grove.
He was a prison guard for Illinois Department of Corrections at Western Illinois Correctional Center, Mount Sterling, retiring in 2008.
Cremation rites will be accorded. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria is in charge of arrangements.
