John A. Phillips, 79, of Vermont died at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Havana Health Care in Havana.

He was born Nov. 17, 1924, in Des Moines, Iowa, a son of Wayne and Margaret Becker Phillips. He married Charlotte Ditmars on Feb. 28, 1947, in Canton. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Wayne of Denver; one daughter, Mary (and Dennis) Sarff of Havana; seven grandchildren; and three sisters, Ella Quin and Anna Smith, both of Canton, and Juanita Gerecke of Cuba.

He was preceded in death by one son, John Wayne Phillips.

A World War II Marine Corps veteran, he served in the South Pacific. He was a member of Vermont American Legion Post 26 and Havana Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6408.

An electrician, he worked thru International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 34 for 50 years, retiring in 1986.

Services were held Monday at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton. Burial was in White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Havana Health Care.
