Mrs. Lera Powell Dies At Age 78

Mrs. Lera Powell, 78, of Smithshire, died at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, 1980, at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg.

Mrs. Powell was born April 5, 1902, near Vermont, the daughter of Samuel Harrison and Sarah Ann Dorsett Phillips. She married Ernest Bryant Powell on Feb. 26, 1924 in Macomb.

Surviving are her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Mildred Ann Landrith of Smithshire, Mrs. Muriel (Eleanor June) Trobaugh and Mrs. Helen B. Hornbaker, both of Macomb; two sons, Rolland Eugene of Monmouth and Samuel Franklin of Knoxville; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Sherman Phillips of Burlington, Iowa; and one sister, Mrs. Major (Nora) Fogle of Plymouth.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, David, Chester, Roscoe, Harry and Peter Phillips.

She had resided in the St. Mary’s, Sciota and Plymouth areas before moving to Smithshire in 1973. She was a retired employee of Hemp and Co. after being employed there for 20 years. She was a member of the former St. Mary’s Baptist Church and the Steel Workers Union.

She was an aunt of Medford Phillips and Forrest Phillips of Astoria.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Sargent’s Funeral Home in Macomb with Rev. Irwin O. Bjelland officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Macomb.
