Mrs. Bessie Mae Gyer Piper, 62, passed away Feb. 8th at St. Mary’s hospital in Quincy, where she had been taken the day before, suffering from diabetes. Friends, Shirley Wilson and Jaunita Lawver, found Mrs. Piper in a coma at her home from which she never recovered.
Mrs. Piper was born in 1892. She was married to Marshall Piper. To this union were born eight children, seven of whom survive, three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Walters, East Gary, Ind., Mary of Chicago, Mrs. Martha Matthews of Quincy, four sons, Glenn of Riggston, Byron of Alton, Paul of Roseville, and Richard of Jacksonville. Marshall Jr. preceded her in death. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, her aged mother, Mrs. Gyer, of Riggston, a sister, Mrs. Hitt, Jacksonville, and a brother of Moline.
Mrs. Piper accepted Christ as her Savior when a child and united with the Methodist church. Later she affiliated with the Assemblies of God and was always faithful to her Master and her church.
Funeral services were held Friday morning at 10:30 o’clock in the Danner Funeral Home in Winchester, with the pastor of the Methodist church officiating. Burial was in a country cemetery near Riggston. Floral offerings were many and beautiful. Misses Shirley Wilson, Jaunita Lawver and Sandra Piper were flower bearers.
Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. Piper’s aunt, Mrs. Anna Haines of Merritt at the Methodist church in the afternoon of the same day.
Mrs. Piper was a former Astoria resident, moving to Quincy a year ago.
