REZIN PRATHER

Old Resident Gone.

Last Illness of Rezin Prather Ended Sunday Morning at his Home in Woodland — Among Early Settlers.

Rezin Prather was born in the state of Indiana, Sept. 12, 1829 and lived to the age of 76 years, 8 months and 8 days.

When a small child he, with his parents, moved to Fulton Co., Ill., where he resided until the close of life.

In the year 1850 he was married to Miss Rebecca O'Donald. To this union six children were given, four of whom preceded him to the spirit land.

In the year 1846* the wife and mother departed this life. Sometime after Mr. Prather was united in marriage with Miss Rebecca Parks. Ten children were born to them, three of whom died in infancy.

The latter part of March Mr. Prather was taken suddenly ill; from which attack he never recovered.

On last Sabbath morning, May 20, he passed peacefully away.

During his sickness he suffered greatly but bore it with patience and christian fortitude. On being asked if he was ready to meet his Savior he said, “Yes I am only waiting for the old ship of Zion to sail around and take me on board.” So passed away a loving father, a true husband, a kind neighbor, being a friend to all and an enemy to none.

He leaves an afflicted wife, nine children and many warm friends.

Father Prather lived a religious life for several years, but made no open profession of faith until a short time before his death, when he assured his friends that he was prepared to go.

Funeral services were conducted at Mote Chapel, Tuesday afternoon by Rev. D. E. Baer assisted by Rev. J. B. Miller. The large assemblage of sympathizing friends and the many beautiful floral offerings bore testimony to the high esteem in which the deceased was held.

* This must have been a typo — how could she have died before she was married? According to “History of Fulton County,” published in 1879 by C. C. Chapman, Rezin's first wife, Rebecca O'Donnel, died in 1860, and he married his second wife, Zilpha Rebecca Parks, the following year. The memorial on Find-A-Grave for Rebecca O'Donnel Prather shows a tombstone photo with the death date of Mar. 1, 1860.
