GEORGE PHELPS

VeteranMajor George Phelps Dead.

Major Geo. Phelps died July 28th at his home at New Albany, Ind., at the age of 68 years. He was the oldest child of the late Major Phelps and was born in Lewistown, Feb. 10, 1832. For a time he was engaged in the merchantile business but afterwards practiced law. He practiced law at Lewistown until the breaking out of the civil war when he went into the army as paymaster and with the rank of major.

He was married to Miss Cornelia Rogers (a sister of Mrs. Rufus Porter of this city). Mrs. Phelps died at the birth of her second child. The major was married the second time to Miss Martha Cadwallader, of New Albany. To them two children were born, their mother dying years ago. Mr. Phelps was married a third time. To them six children were born and she and them survive him.
