Eletha O’Neal

Eletha O'NealEletha C. O’Neal, 99, of Quincy, formerly of Rushville, died at 9:40 a.m. June 11, 2015, at the Sunset Home in Quincy.

She was born Feb. 11, 1916, in Bainbridge Township, Schuyler County, a daughter of James Barnett and Sophia Wetzel Lawler. She married Norris C. “Bud” O’Neal on June 25, 1932, in Rushville. He preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 1985.

She also was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Susan Bonser; two sisters, Edith Brace and Geneva Arlene Gragg; and three brothers, Victor, Roland and Norman Lawler.

Surviving are two daughters, Carol (and Kenneth) Helkey of Quincy and Sandra (and Roger) Emerick of Branson, Mo.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren.

Eletha and her husband started the O’Neal Convalescent Home in Rushville in 1949 and operated it until 1955. Then owned the Dairy Queen in Havana until 1962, when they began to help open Dairy Queen stores throughout Illinois, Iowa and Missouri, retiring in 1979.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Rushville.

Services were held Monday at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with David Haney officiating. Burial was in the Rushville City Cemetery.
