Thelma Orwig

Thelma OrwigThelma Orwig, 83, of Smithfield died at 12:18 p.m. Aug. 14, 2013, at Clayberg Nursing Home in Cuba.

She was born Feb. 8, 1930, in Cuba, the daughter of Ghlee and Faye Henderson Howerter. They preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her stepmom, Bertha, by whom she was raised. She married James R. "Pete" Orwig on June 26, 1949, in Smithfield. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1979.

Surviving are four daughters, Kathy (and Dennis) Smysor of Smithfield, Diana (and Chuck) Williams of Smithfield, Janet (and Jerry) Young of Virden and Patricia (and Dave) Jones of Table Grove; one brother, Sheldon Howerter of Harlan, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

She retired from Fulton County Treasurer's Office.

She was a member of Brock United Methodist Church.

She was involved in organizations such as DAR, Women's Crisis, Fulton County Legal Secretaries, Fulton County Board, CUSD #3 School Board, Lewistown Mutual Insurance Board and others.

Services were held Monday at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with Rev. Larry Wright officiating. Burial was in Baughman Cemetery in rural Smithfield.

Memorials may be made to Red Brick School or Fulton/Mason Women's Crisis Center.
