CHARLES E. “ZEKE” ORWIG

Charles E. “Zeke” Orwig, 77, of Smithfield, died at 5:44 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

He was born Sept. 24, 1921, a son of Charles F. and Vina E. Dick Orwig.

Surviving are Berniece Bordner, with whom he made his home; and three sisters, Frances Pauline Orwig of Morton, Mrs. Raymond (Tressa) Sheely of Dixon and Mrs. Leroy (Alice) Riley of Canton.

One brother and one sister preceded him in death.

A member of Russell Smith American Legion Post 533 in Cuba, he was a World War II Army veteran, serving with the 116th Infantry in northern France and central Europe. He was the recipient of the American Theatre Service ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Threatre Serice ribbon, World War II Victory Medal and Army Occupation Medal.

Cremation was accorded. There will be no services or visitation. Inurnment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium in Arlington, Va., where military rites will be conducted. Henry Memorial Home in Cuba is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Cass-Putman Rescue Squad.
