LESTER A. “RED” OSWALT

Lester A. “Red” Oswalt, 82, of Havana, died at 6:35 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 1996, at Mason District Hospital.

He was born Oct. 5, 1913, in Eupora, Miss., a son of Virgil Hudson and Sarah Brown Oswalt. He married Emelia Dickson “Mele” Mayo on Oct. 24, 1937, in West Point, Miss. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Betty Carol Chipman of Havana and Patsy Ann Reilly of Auburndale, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, John Oswalt and William Oswalt, both of Memphis.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Edward Oswalt, and five brothers.

A pipefitter in construction, he was a member of Steamfitters Local 137. He was a social member of Havana Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6408. He was a former member of Ansar in Springfield.

Funeral services were held Friday at Hurley Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Maffett officiating. Cremation followed the services, and burial of ashes will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Havana.
