HENRY OVIATT

VeteranFormer Resident Dies

Henry Oviatt Aged 80 Years Died December 30, at Hollywood, California; Burial There.

Word was received here last week that Henry Oviatt died December 30, at 6:20 o’clock a.m., at his home in Hollywood, California, aged almost 80 years. Many of our people will remember Mr. and Mrs. Oviatt who lived in their home in the west part of Astoria, for many years and was known and loved by the young people as well as older residents.

In the last few weeks before his death we are informed that he wanted to come back to Astoria and mentioned time and again the names of old friends long since gone to the better land. He was laid to rest in Hollywood. The following Astoria friends residing in California attended the funeral: W. W. Emerson and wife, Mr. and Mrs. John Falkenstein, Miss Mabel Toler and Mrs. Ida Parker-Jones.

Henry Oviatt was born in Allegheny Co., New York, May 9, 1840. At the age of two years, he with his parents moved to Fulton Co., Illinois, where he lived several years. Later moved to Wisconsin from which state he enlisted in the Civil War, serving the full four years. After the war he returned to Lewistown, Ill., where he married Mary A. Jones July 15, 1866. Three girls were born to this union, all of whom are living: Mrs. Fred W. Cook, Hollywood, California, Mrs. Will S. Jordan, Baldwin Park, California and Mrs. T. M. Cox, Galesburg, Ill.

Mr. Oviatt united with the Pleasant Grove Baptist church near Cuba, Ill., fifty-two years ago, was S. S. Superintendent and deacon of a Baptist church in Astoria, Ill., and on moving to Hutchinson, Kansas thirteen years ago, he united and was a deacon in the First Baptist church of that city. A year ago last July he moved to Hollywood, California and passed away from his new-found home.

Three years ago Mr. and Mrs. Oviatt celebrated their golden wedding and had he lived until next May he would have been eighty years of age.

No particular disease caused his death, simply falling asleep and awakening in the Better Land.
