Robert NelmesRobert L. Nelmes, 91, of Cuba died Aug. 15, 2013, at Graham Hospital in Canton after a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 11, 1921, in rural Cuba, the son of William and Alta May Murphy Nelmes. He married Doris Smith on March 7, 1947, in Palmyra, Mo. She survives.

Also surviving are two children, Donna (and Bruce) Schmeiser of West Lafayette, Ind., and Dale (and Lynne) Nelmes of McHenry; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He graduated from Cuba High school in 1938 and enlisted in the Army, serving in the medical corps overseas from 1942-1945.

He began farming in Cuba at age 16, and continued farming in Lafayette for over 30 years. He retired to his hometown of Cuba in 1990.

He was involved in community organizations including Stark County Farm Bureau, Goshen Township Board, Mid-Century Telephone Board and American Legion. He served on Stark County Selective Service Board during the tumultuous Viet Nam War era. In addition, he was a lifetime member of United Methodist Church in Cuba and Lafayette.

A memorial service will be held at Cuba United Methodist Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. Family will be present at the church at 10 a.m. for visitation. Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Cuba is in charge of arrangements.
