Thurman E. Newell, 85, of Beardstown, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at Heritage Manor East.

He was born Nov. 15, 1911, in rural Schuyler County, a son of Frank and Eva Suddeth Newell. He married Dorothy Carpenter Roots on July 12, 1939, in Yuma, Ariz. She died in 1983. He married Twila Belville on Feb. 23, 1985, in Beardstown. She died Sept. 4, 1997. Two sisters and one brother also preceded him in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Bill (Bettigail) Dyche of Beardstown; two brothers, Dale Newell of Jacksonville, Ill., and H.L. Newell of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A member of Beardstown American Legion Post, he was a World War II Navy veteran, serving as lieutenant commander on the U.S.S. Lexington, retiring in 1954.

He also formerly owned and operated Newell’s Used Cars in Beardstown.

Services were held Saturday at Sager Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Sheese officiating. Burial was in Browning Cemetery near Browning.
