Fred Nichols Of Galesburg Dies

Fred W. Nichols, 82, of rural Galesburg, died at 5:55 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, 1990, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Galesburg.

Born Nov. 25, 1907, in Minot, N.D., the son of George and Catherine (Fecher) Nichols, he married Floy Breece in Galesburg on Feb. 3, 1934. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, James of Gilson, Gary and Robert, both of Galesburg; 13 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and one step-great grandchild.

Also surviving are four brothers, Paul and Bernard, both in Florida, Lawrence of Woodhull and Louis of Knoxville; five sisters, Bertha Sopher of Peoria, Eva Kenney of Silvis, Louise Dennis of Oneida, Mary Turner of Ipava and Irene Day of Galesburg.

He worked for Johnson Oil Co., in both the Williamsfield and Elmwood areas until 1939, then he farmed in the Galesburg area until retiring in 1962. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic church.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday at his church with Rev. James McAteer officiating. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Watson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
