Gary McDonaldGary Dean “Mac” McDonald, 76, of Rushville died at 12:40 a.m. Sept. 2, 2023, at HSHS Saint Johns Hospital in Springfield.

He was born May 10, 1947, in Quincy, a son of Joseph Roy and Wyllodeane Eyman McDonald. He married Brenda Heffren on Dec. 19, 1970, in Rushville. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Annette (and Stanley) Cooley of Clearwater, Fla.; one son, James (and Diana) McDonald of Jacksonville; one brother, Bob McDonald of Quincy; one sister, Betty (and Gene) Cox of Quincy; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dick and Wayne McDonald; and one infant sister.

He was a Marine Corps veteran, serving from 1966-69 with a rank of Corporal.

He worked at the Western Illinois Correctional Center in Mount Sterling, retiring in 2009 with a rank of Correctional Lieutenant. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Pastor Fred Fritz officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Browning Cemetery with full military rites.

Memorials may be made to the Tiny House project in Rushville.
