Shirley MohlenbruckShirley Ann Mathewson Mohlenbruck, 85, of Frederick died at 1:23 a.m. Feb. 4, 2017, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

She was born April 18, 1931, in Ripley, a daughter of James Leo and Irma Helen Scherrer Hendricks. She first married Leland Mathewson on Dec. 18, 1949, in Ripley. He preceded her in death on March 7, 1987. She later married Herman Mohlenbruck on April 20, 1990, in Ripley. He survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Rick Lee (and Kay) Mathewson of Rushville and Tony (and Linda) Mathewson of Timewell; one stepson, Rudy Mohlenbruck of Rushville; two stepdaughters, Katherine Murphy of Girard and Debra (and Ben) Tomhave of Jacksonville; three sisters, Lyla Ashbaker of Ripley, Darla (and Bob) Whaley of Meadview, Ariz., and Karolyn Hendricks of Mount Sterling; five grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harlan Edward Hendricks and David Eugene Hendricks; and one sister, Rosemary Aldrich.

She was a 1949 graduate of Mount Sterling High School. She and her husband Lee owned and operated L & S Grocery Store in Ripley from 1964-80. She later worked as a secretary for The Tank Clinic, Dr. Shaw and the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, retiring in 1990. She served as the Ripley Village Clerk, Township Clerk, Township Trustee and Ripley Village President.

She was a member of Sugar Grove United Methodist Church.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at her church, south of Rushville, with Richard Young and Pastor Charla Meyers officiating. Burial will follow in the Ripley Cemetery. Wood Funeral Home in Rushville is in charge of arrangements.
