Fred MillerFred Miller, 84, of Quincy Veterans Home, formerly of Vermont, died at 8:40 a.m. June 30, 2014, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

He was born March 21, 1930, in Industry, a son of John and Maude Brooks Miller. He married Martha Jane Mercer on July 29, 1956, in Vermont. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Ken (and Linda) Miller of Coal City and Jeff Miller and Clifford (and Charla) Miller, both of Vermont; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Breta Corman; and one brother, DeMont Miller.

He first worked for Maremont Automotive in Cicero. He then worked as superintendent at McGraw Edison/Cooper Industries in Macomb from 1966 until retiring in 1991.

He was in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-54 with a rank of S/SGT (T) with the HQ 501st Air Defense Group.

He was a member of VIT School Board for many years. He was president of Vermont Memorial Ballpark for many years, where he coached baseball and softball. He and Merle Waller started the Vermont Memorial Ballpark 4th of July Celebration.

He was a member of Industry Methodist Church. He served as treasurer for Village of Vermont for several years.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Vermont Christian Church with Pastor Tim Gilliland officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Burial will be in Vermont Cemetery with military rites provided by Vermont American Legion.
