Glade MartindaleGlade R. Martindale, 87, of Smithfield died at 9:25 p.m. April 1, 2009, at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg.

He was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Bernadotte, a son of Grover and Willie Green Martindale. He married Mildred LaFern Pigg on Aug. 4, 1945, in Lewistown. She died July 4, 1994.

He also was preceded in death by one son, Bill Martindale; one brother and three sisters.

Surviving are four sons, Robert (and Debra) Martindale of Smithfield, Doug (and Cheryl) Martindale of Ipava, Dennis (and Elizabeth) Martindale of Canton and Kenneth (and Beverly) Martindale of Lewistown; three daughters, Sara (and Jeff) Toomer of Mahomet, Gena (and Dana) O’Leary of Canton and Ellen (and Steven) Milleson of Canton; one sister, Freda (and Joe) Gallien of Canton; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was a World War II Army veteran serving with the 104th Infantry Timber Wolves, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

He worked over 40 years as a coal miner before retiring, and was a member of UMWA.

He was a 60-year member of Lewistown VFW Post 5001.

Services were held Monday at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown with Rev. Layton Malone officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery with military rites conducted by VFW 5001 and American Legion Bishop Post 1.
