DORIS H. (HAGEN) MOWERY

Doris Mowery

Doris H. Mowery, 92, of Canton, formerly of Cuba, died at 5:05 p.m. Nov. 30, 2006, at Graham Hospital in Canton.

She was born May 5, 1914, in Warren, a daughter of Henry and Edna Gigous Hagen. She married Mahlon W. Mowery on Aug. 27, 1936, in Chicago. He died Feb. 1, 1997.

Also preceding her in death was one sister.

Surviving are three sons, John J. (and Judy) of Avon, Richard W. (and Mary Sue) of Cuba and Dr. James H. (and Char) of McHenry; one daughter, Mary Jane (and Guy) Gilpin of Canton; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

She taught school for 20 years in Chicago and Cuba, retiring in 1971. She played musical accompaniments for students at music contests for many years.

She was a graduate of Oak Park-River Forest Township High School and Northwestern University of Evanston in 1934, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority.

She was a member of Cuba Woman's Club and Chapter CB of the PEO Sisterhood and former president of both organizations.

She was a member of Cuba United Methodist Church where she served as organist for 38 years. She also was a member and former president of Cuba United Methodist Women.

She served as an election judge for many years.

Cremation will be accorded. A memorial service was held Tuesday at her church with Rev. Joe Tomich officiating. Private family burial services were held at Cuba Cemetery. Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Cuba was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to her church.
