Caroline Mercer

Caroline R. Mercer, 91, of Astoria Healthcare Center, formerly of Ipava, died at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

She was born Oct. 20, 1907, in Pleasant Township, Fulton County, the daughter of Frank A. and Laura Lee Bolton Smith. She married Marshall J. Mercer on Jan. 31, 1930, in Lewistown. He died Dec. 23, 1991.

Surviving are five nieces, Toni Redlingshafer of Mapleton, Carol Hanna of Princeton, Mary Margaret Bohn of Grand Rapids, Mich., Ann Carter of Fountain Hills, Ariz., and Kay Nippa of Lake St. Louis, Mo.

In her early years, she taught school in the Ipava area. She later was a telephone operator for Ipava Telephone Co. and last was a clerk at the Ipava Post Office. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.

Services were held Saturday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Ipava with Rev. John Pereboom officiating. Burial was in Ipava Cemetery.
