Former Astoria Business Man Died Friday

Clay Mooney, well known here, a former Astoria business man, died Friday evening at 6:20 o’clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ethel Griffith, Bushnell, with whom he [film scratched — may read “was residing.”]

He was stricken suddenly ill Saturday noon, July 26th. He had from the day he was taken ill the constant care for twelve weeks of the four children and a nurse, Miss Stella Coleman and the assistance of Glen Mariner.

Henry Clay Mooney was born July 8th, 1844, at Rushville, Illinois, son of Henry L. and Octava Kelly Mooney. The father and mother and three sisters, Mrs. Jacob Pruitt, Mrs. Frances Friday and Miss Ann Mooney preceding him in death many years ago. The family moved to Astoria, Ill., when H. C. was five years old, where he grew up, married and raised his family. Living in Astoria until his health failed, he has divided the last ten years in the homes and with his two children.

On Nov. 16, 1871 he was married to Sarah Elizabeth McClelland of Astoria. To this union were born the two children who survive their father, Guy who married Dolly Mummert and now living in Morris, Ill., and Ethel, who married Dr. John C. Griffith and lives in Bushnell, Ill.

Mrs. Mooney passed away Feb. 11, 1901 at Astoria, after a long illness in Phoenix, Arizona, where the family had gone for her health. Besides the two children, Mr. Mooney is survived by his only brother, Robert N. Mooney of Astoria and with whom he was for many years associated in the drug business. H. C. Mooney having gone into that business in 1866 and in which he remained 56½ years. He also for many years was president of the Peoples State Bank of Astoria, and with his son Guy in both the hardware and furniture business. He had practically dropped all business activities during the last few years.

The funeral was held at the daughter’s home Monday at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Everett, pastor of the Presbyterian church and Rev. Sailor, pastor of the M. E. church, had the services in charge, after which the family, accompanied by a number of friends and relatives, drove to the cemetery at the old home town at Astoria where Mr. Mooney was buried beside his wife.

Bottenberg, Rushville, Mrs. George Allison, Springfield, Mrs. Mel Walker, Mrs. Leo Roach, Galesburg, Mrs. Fred Cline, Mrs. Frank Kuhl, Mrs. H. G. Russel, Mrs. L. G. Schaeffer, Beardstown, Mrs. Ansel Poland, Corrine Hawkins, Mrs. Bertha Peterson, Nedra Hawkins, Roseville, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Jones, Bader, Ill.
