George L. Lasswell, 80, of Smithfield died at 9:35 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Canton.

He was born Aug. 13, 1923, in Putman Township, Fulton County, a son of John Henry and Alice Mae Stevenson Lasswell. He married Norma T. Lafary on Jan. 11, 1947, in Ipava. She survives.

Also surviving are five sons, George Eugene (and Zelda), Cecil, Dennis and Daniel, all of Smithfield, and Norman (and Marcia) of Havana; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandsons; and one stepgreat-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and one grandchild.

He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the South Pacific.

A member of United Auto Workers Local 1145, he worked at the former Canton Works of International Harvester Co. for 31 years, retiring in 1977.

He was a former member of Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department.

Graveside services were held Monday at Baughman Cemetery in rural Smithfield with Rev. Layton Malone officiating. Graveside military rites were conducted by Cuba American Legion Post 533. Arrangements were by Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Cuba.

Memorials may be made to Cass-Putman Rescue Squad, Spoon River Hospice at Graham Hospital in Canton or Smithfield Church of the Nazarene.
