WILLIAM LEYHE SR.

Captain Leyhe

Captain William Leyhe sr., aged ninety years, died Friday at his home in Alton. He was president of the Eagle Packet Company and for many years was captain on their packet which plied the Illinois river from St. Louis to Peoria. William and his brother, Henry, who died in 1914, built the Young Eagle, first of the Eagle boats that made the line well known in steamboating history. In succeeding years the brothers built many other boats which operated on the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois rivers. Leyhe quit traveling on the river three years ago, but until his death he daily watched the Mississippi from his rocking chair.
