Dr. Ruth KesselDr. Ruth Miner Kessel, 96, of Whitewater, Wis., died Jan. 29, 2017, at Fairhaven in Whitewater.

She was born May 28, 1920, near Table Grove, a daughter of Albert Burns and Ann Lee Dilworth Miner. She married Abbas Kessel in 1984. He preceded her in death in 1987.

She also was preceded in death by one brother, William Miner; and one sister, Marian Miller.

Surviving are six nieces and nephews and several cousins.

She grew up near Table Grove and attended a rural one-room schoolhouse. She graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, and served in the Navy during World War II. She was one of the two first female admissions and graduates from the University of Chicago Law School. She became a longtime faculty member/professor from 1958-85 at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She retired from teaching in 1985.

Services were held Saturday at Congregational Church in Whitewater. The Nitardy Funeral Home in Whitewater was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Kessel Peace Institute at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minn., in her memory.
