Exploding oil claimed its second Mercer county victim within one month under almost identical conditions on Monday of last week, when Charles Burton Kauffman, aged twenty-three years, of Joy, died at St. Anthony’s hospital, Rock Island, as the result of burns received at about 3:30 p.m., when gasoline, which he had poured on a fire in an effort to revive it, exploded, wreathing him in flames and burning the clothing almost entirely from his body.
