James William “Bill” Johnson, 72, of Astoria died at 2 a.m. June 11, 2007, at Heartland Healthcare Center in Canton.

He was born April 28, 1935, in Quincy, the son of Albert Henry and Elda Lorene Freshwater Johnson. He married Helen Marie Brillhart on May 20, 1956, in Astoria. She died July 6, 2004.

He also was preceded in death by his daughter, Joyce Kay Johnson.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Johnson of Evansville, Ind., and Cindy (and Thomas) Colello of Richlandtown, Pa.; three sisters, Jackie (and Ed) Cobb of Good Hope, Barbara (and Bob) McKinnon of Taylorville and Peggy White of White Hall; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955, with the rank of Corporal.

He was a lineman for L.E. Myers for nine years, then became an electrician for AMAX Coal Company for over 30 years.

He was a member of Astoria Christian Church and United Mine Workers of America.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Astoria Cemetery with Gary Sheets officiating. Visitation will be from 10-11:30 a.m. Friday at Shawgo Memorial Home. Military rites will be provided by the Astoria American Legion Post #25. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
