ELSIE J. (SHIRLEY) JONES

Elsie Jones

Elsie J. Jones, 86, of Cuba, died at 6:10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, at Graham Hospital Extended Care in Canton.

She was born Sept. 26, 1911, in the state of Indiana, a daughter of Thomas R. and Mina (Mullen) Shirley. She married Floyd H. Jones on Sept. 7, 1935, at Pekin. He died Dec. 18, 1970. She was also preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.

Survivors included one son, David Jones of Holts Summit, Mo.; one daughter, Mrs. Chris (Shirley) Heller of Carlinville, Ill.; one niece, Alice Manny of Oldsmar, Fla., who was raised by Mrs. Jones; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She had worked as a Nurses Aide at the Graham Hospital for 15 years before retiring in 1976. She was an avid gardener and well known for the variety and quality of flowers she grew. She was a member of the Cuba/Ipava Order of Eastern Star Chapter #226 for more than 50 years. She was a Past Matron and served for 47 years as the chapter’s secretary. She was a member of the Cuba United Methodist Church.

Services were held Saturday at the Henry Memorial Home in Cuba with Mrs. Jones’ nephew, Rev. Thomas Shirley, officiating. Burial was in Cuba Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to either Spoon River Hospice of Graham Hospital or the Cuba United Methodist Church.
