John HerbsterJohn H. Herbster, 73, of Rushville died at 6:54 p.m. April 16, 2018, at his home.

He was born Feb. 5, 1945, in Quincy, a son of John “Fritz” and Sadie Briggs Herbster. He married Norma Bedenbender on Jan. 1, 1979, in Rushville. She survives.

Also surviving are six children, Nikki Wenger of Rushville, John (and Jen) Herbster of Cuba, David (and Tammy) Meyer, Michelle (and Rick) Carty, Becky (and Richard) Loughary, all of Rushville, and Angie (and Scott) Trone of Frederick; one sister, Fritzie (and Jim) Harper of Clayton; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death one granddaughter, Jordan Nikole Wenger; one brother, Louie Hammer; and one niece, Janet Kay Harper.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1963-65.

He worked as a mechanic at Brown Motors and Gentry Motors, both in Macomb. In 1978, he began working in the maintenance department at Western Illinois University. In 1990, he began working as an independent flooring installer, retiring in 2015.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mount Sterling, the Schuyler American Legion Post #4, 40 et 8, a local fishing club and the Muscooten Bay Long Rifle Club. He volunteered with Jenkins Racing and was a softball and Little League coach.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with Reverend Mike Courson officiating. Burial will follow in the Palm Cemetery, west of Rushville, with military rites by the United States Air Force Honor Detail and the Schuyler American Legion Post #4. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A prayer service will be conducted at the conclusion of the visitation.
