Helen HughesHelen I. Hughes, 98, of Macomb, formerly of Table Grove, died at 3:40 p.m. April 23, 2011, at Wesley Village Healthcare Center in Macomb.

She was born Jan. 11, 1913, in Easton, a daughter of James and Bertha Samuell Lowers. She married Harry K. "Jack" Hughes on Jan. 30, 1942, in Kahoka, Mo. He died Dec. 14, 1979.

She also was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Lowers; and one sister, Octavia Keith.

Surviving are one daughter, Jane (and Roger) Brown of Macomb; one son, Joe Hughes of Dunlap; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She had lived in Table Grove since 1935 before moving to Macomb in 2008 to live with her daughter.

She was a member of Table Grove Community Church, Chapter C PEO, Delta Kappa Gamma and Table Grove Squares.

She was a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University majoring in physics and math. She taught one year at a one-room school in Mason County, several years at Table Grove High School and later taught math at VIT High School for many years before her retirement in 1973.

Services were held Tuesday at Table Grove Community Church with Reverend Rob Harrison officiating. Burial was in Harris Cemetery west of Table Grove. Clugston-Tibbits Funeral Home in Macomb was in charge of arrangements.
