Mattie HareMattie M. Hare, 97, of Palmyra, Mo., formerly of Rushville, died at 6:55 a.m. Jan. 2, 2009, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra.

She was born Sept. 20, 1911, in Schuyler County, a daughter of Charles Estes and Emilla Phillips Shelts. She married Ansel Kirtz Hare on May 1, 1930, in Rushville. He died May 28, 1994.

She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Rena Henninger; one grandson, Jeffrey Lynn Henninger; four brothers, Arthur, Floyd, Lester and Leonard Shelts; and two sisters, Lucille Shelts and Avonale Raper.

Surviving are one son, Norman (and Evalie) Hare of Hannibal, Mo.; two sisters, Oletha Briggs of Quincy and Eva Reeder of Galesburg; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one step great-great-grandchild.

She was a farmer with her husband on their farm near Camden.

She was a former member of Shiloh Church near Camden before moving to Rushville when she transferred her membership to First United Methodist Church.

She was a volunteer with RSVP, Schuyler Jail Museum and Genealogical Center in Rushville and Schuyler County Senior Citizens Center.

Services were held Monday at Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Steve Pichaske officiating. Burial was in Rushville City Cemetery.
