Harold HigginsHarold G. Higgins, 88, of Lewistown died at 7:20 p.m. Nov. 28, 2007, at Mason District Hospital emergency room in Havana.

He was born July 29, 1919, in St. David, the son of James and Naomi Paulding Higgins. He married Peggy Ketcham on July 21, 1941, in Bowling Green, Mo. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Jim (and Mary) Higgins of Manhattan, Kansas; one daughter, Karen (and Larry) Shonkwiler of Gridley; one sister, Rosalie (and Quentin) Hand of Lewistown; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

He worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad as an agent yardmaster until his retirement in 1977, and maintained an active interest in railroading, including membership in the retired telegrapher’s club.

He was a member of Illinois Street Christian Church in Lewistown. He also was a member of the Morning Star Lodge #734 in Canton; Lewistown Park Board; Lewistown Optimist Club; and Lewistown Historical Society, where he was influential in the restoration of the narrow gauge depot.

He served as a member of the Lewistown Community High School board for 40 years and organized the first youth baseball program in Lewistown.

Services were held Monday at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown with Rev. Ray Greenfield officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any charity of the donor’s choice.
