Mary Hoopes

Mary E. Hoopes, 92, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Astoria died at 11:10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005, at Vitas Haven House in Atlanta.

She was born Aug. 7, 1913, in Browning, a daughter of Edward and Abbie Blankenship Stambaugh. She married Richard L. Hoopes on Jan. 20, 1934, in Pekin. He died March 17, 1986.

She also was preceded in death by an infant sister.

Surviving are one son, Gary (and Kerri) of Atlanta; and three grandchildren, Paul Hoopes of Memphis, Tenn., and Laura Symmes and Craig (and Michelle) Hoopes, both of Nashville, Tenn.

She was secretary for the Township Officials of Illinois for 16 years.

She was an accomplished pianist and organist. She started playing at church services in her hometown of Browning at age 12 and continued playing piano and organ for over 50 years at Astoria Christian Church and at the Campbell-Stone North Retirement Apartments in Atlanta. She played the piano on the River Boat Queen when it docked in Browning and was the piano player for the silent movies at the local theatre. She taught piano lessons for many years. She also worked in the gift shop at Campbell-Stone North Retirement Apartments.

She was a member of Astoria Christian Church and Sandy Springs Christian Church. She was floor president at Campbell-Stone North Retirement Apartments and won several service awards.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Astoria Cemetery.
