George F. Hammes, 72, of Loda died at 7:12 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at home.

He was born Aug. 16, 1932, in Plymouth, Ind., a son of Charles and Clara Umlor Hammes. He married Helen Doolen on May 29, 1955, at Plymouth, Ind. He then married Nancy Allen on June 2, 1972, in Clinton. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, John (and Dana) Hammes of Oconomowoc, Wis., and Daniel (and Deborah) Kensel of Thailand; four daughters, Karen (and Monte) Gilson of Bader; Cathleen (and Rod) Marr of Jacksonville, Catherine Kensel-Hammes of Seattle and Elizabeth (and Michael) Chickini of Paxton; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Henry of Elkhart, Ind., Fred and Charles of Mishawaka, Ind., and Peter of Indianapolis; and three sisters, Clara Kovacs of Selingsgrove, Pa., Martha Shafer of South Bend, Ind., and Sister Carlita Hammes of South Bend, Ind.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, two brothers and two sisters.

He was employed by Bee Boat plant and was recently employed by Ace Hardware and Kirchner Building Center in Paxton.

He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from January 1953 to October 1954.

He was also a member of Paxton VFW Post No. 4214 and the Paxton American Legion Post No. 150.

Funeral services were held Dec. 16 at Ford-Baier Funeral Home in Paxton.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital in Louisville, Ky.
