SAMUEL C. “JAP” HOBBS

“Jap” Hobbs

Despondency is assigned as the reason for the frightful suicide of “Jap” Hobbs, about fifty years old, in McKee township, Hancock county, late Tuesday afternoon. He is said to have walked to the side of the house after procuring a shotgun, and placing the muzzle to his temple, pulled the trigger and blew away the entire top of his head. Hobbs was a well known character and had been a resident of that neighborhood all his life, where he owned a small farm of perhaps twenty acres.

[Laura's note: The article did not list his actual first name, only his nickname. Based on the Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths Index, I believe his first name was Samuel, but this is a guess.]
