Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at five o’clock from the home of Mr. John Scripps, Rev. L. A. Crown, pastor of the Christian church having charge. Interment was made in the family vault in the Astoria cemetery.

Deceased was a resident of Astoria for many years, while her husband was engaged in the lumber yard business here and on account of her pleasing personality she will long remain in the memory of those who had the opportunity to know her.

Ella K., daughter of Adam F. and Mary A. Walker was born in Keene Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, Sept. 10, 1845. She was one of a family of four children: three of whom, namely, Mrs. E. Bible, Malon E. Defling and Ella K. Hettrick have crossed the Jordan of death. One brother L. G. Walker, of Centerburg, Ohio, being the only living member of the family. There was a half brother, Horace, who died when eleven months old.

In the spring of 1863 Mrs. Hettrick came to Astoria, Ill., and engaged in teaching school. On June 5th, 1864 she was united in marriage with Daniel M. Hettrick. Four children, Minnie B., who died 28 years ago, Lillian May, wife of Mr. Taylor Emerson of Spokane, Washington, Laura who died twenty-four years ago, being the wife of Mr. John Scripps of Astoria, and Florine, wife of Mr. A. B. Collins of Denver, Colorado, resulted from this union.

Mr. Hettrick died in 1907 in Denver, Colorado. The afore-mentioned living children together with one brother and three grandchildren mourn the loss of a mother, sister and grandmother whose life and character will ever shine like a beacon light along their various pathways in life and will help all to nobler living. The following expresses the esteem of one associated with the family for nine years:

“I expect to pass through this world but once. If therefore there be any kindness I can show to my fellow beings, let me not defer or neglect it for I will not pass this way again.” Such was the spirit of the departed one.

Her life was an expression of goodness; kindly solicitous for the good of others, helpful to those in need and at all times facing life’s battle with a brave spirit, and the consciousness of the days well spent. — A Friend
