Elizabeth "Betty" GriderElizabeth L. “Betty” Grider, 73, of Rushville died at 4:50 p.m. Oct. 25, 2013, at Snyder’s Vaughn-Haven Nursing Home in Rushville.

She was born June 5, 1940, in Hadley, a daughter of Carl and Geraldine Schultz Barnes. She married Robert Grider on Dec. 22, 1962, in Barry. He survives.

Also surviving are her children, Lisa Ayer of La Harpe, Eric Grider (and Betsy Lashmet) of Chebanse, Erin (and Leslie) Grider of Hoffman Estates and Chad (and Michelle) Grider of Rockford; two brothers, Bob (and Marilyn) Barnes of Barry and Don (and Kate) Barnes of Sterling, Colo.; and 10 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lori LouEmma Grider; and one sister, Carolyn Parks.

She graduated from Barry High School in 1958 and from Western Illinois University in 1962. She began her teaching career at Ellington Elementary School in Quincy. While taking time to raise her family, she would substitute teach in various Schuyler County schools. In 1982, she resumed her career first at Browning Elementary School until it’s closing in 1995. She then taught for Schuyler School District Middle School until her retirement in 2005. She continued to substitute until February, 2013.

She was a member of Illinois Teacher’s Association; National Teacher’s Association; First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir; and a 50-year member of Order of the Eastern Star.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Rushville with Reverend Steve Pichaske officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry. Wood Funeral Home in Rushville is in charge of arrangements.
