Mary Gilson

Mary K. Gilson, 85, of Vermont, died at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997, at Astoria Health Care Center in Astoria.

She was born Nov. 18, 1911, in Abingdon, the daughter of S. Kingsley and Cecil Nevella Croft Andrews. She married Kenneth K. Gilson on Aug. 29, 1933, in Vermont. He died Sept. 1, 1973. Two brothers also preceded her in death.

Surviving are two sons, Jon K. Gilson of Jacksonville and Charles K. Gilson of Vermont; one brother, Richard Andrews of Abingdon; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graduate of Western Illinois State Teachers College in Macomb, she was a teacher. Also a licensed beauty operator, she and her husband owned and operated a beauty shop and barber shop in Chicago for many years. She also managed Whitney’s Dry Goods Store in Vermont for many years. She was a member of Vermont Christian Church.

Cremation has been accorded and private burial of ashes will be in Vermont Cemetery at a later date.

Kost Memorial Home was in charge of arrangements.
