VeteranMacomb Man Dies Of Gunshot Wound

Oliver Featherlin Jr., 49, died shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot. He was found by his wife in back of a sports shop he operated on Route 136 west of Macomb.

Dr. Donald H. Dexter, McDonough County Coroner, said he was shot in the head with a .32 automatic pistol and the gun was found at his side. Dr. Dexter said he had been despondent.

An inquest into the death is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at McDonough District Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home by the Rev. Kenneth Mortonson. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mr. Featherlin was born Sept. 11, 1920, at Macomb, the son of Oliver E. and Lula White Featherlin. He served in the navy during World War II in the Pacific area. He was a merchant and farmer and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Macomb Hunters Club, the YMCA, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce and the Lamoine Valley Boat Club. He was first married to Florence Merritt in 1947; she is deceased. He married Bessie Baldry November 22, 1955, and she survives.

Other survivors include his mother; three daughters, Mrs. Lois Cross of Good Hope, Rhonda and Becky at home; two sons, David and John at home; and one sister, Esther Johnson of Orchard Lake, Mich. One sister is deceased.
