MARTHA ELLEN (HUGHES) ELLIOTT

Died In Kansas, Born In Fulton Co.

August 13, 1930, marked the passing of another one of those sturdy pioneer mothers, who had so much to do with the building of this great northwest country.

Martha Ellen Hughes was born March 3, 1853, in Fulton county, Illinois, and died at the home of her daughter Emma, in Kanorado, Kan., Aug. 13, 1930. Her age at the time of her demise was 77 years, 5 months and 10 days. All of her children were at her bed side when she passed to the Great Beyond.

On July 28, 1870, Martha Ellen Hughes and Richard B. Elliott were united in the holy bonds of matrimony. To them were born nine children, two of whom passed away when as yet small, the eldest son, Charles, passed away in 1918.

She leaves to mourn her loss the following named children: E. A. Elliott of Hong Kong, O. M. Elliott, Topeka, Kan., O. L. Elliott and Claude Elliott of Edson, Kan., Mrs. Flora Garrett of Levant and Mrs. Emma Burd of Kanorado, Kansas. There are thirty-nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren as well as a host of friends.

Mrs. Elliott moved to Thomas County, Kansas in 1885 where she resided the greater part of her life. Since the death of her husband in 1920 she has made her home in Levant, Kans., with her daughter, Mrs. Flora Garrett. She joined the Methodist church in Levant in 1895 and lived a devoted Christian life. She reared a large family and was always conscious of her responsibility as a mother, always by instruction and example, pointing her children and those with whom she came in contact in the paths of righteousness and truth. Her home was a meeting place for the young people who were the friends of her children and thus her friends. Mrs. Elliott made and kept a host of friends and lived deep in these friendships, and very many will be the number of these faithful, who will miss her during the years when mortality decreases band of those “whom we have known for awhile.”

The funeral services were conducted at the Colby Methodist church. The funeral cortege went overland to Lenora, Kans., where Mrs. Elliott was laid to rest beside her beloved husband to await the resurrection morning. Truly a great and good soul has gone to be with her Lord.
