Fall From Q Engine Near Beardstown Kills Fireman

William Evans, 45-year-old fireman for the C. B. & Q. was killed near Browning Saturday morning when he fell from the runway of his engine, while attempting to adjust an automatic stoker.

Evans’ body was found at Sugar Creek. A section gang started search for the body when the fireman was missed after the train arrived in Beardstown.

The engineer, Harvey Stambaugh of Bader, said that Evans had left the cab to fix the stoker near Sugar Creek. He told authorities that he thought Evans was having trouble with the stoker and did not miss him during the short run into Beardstown.
