Delma Damos

Delma DamosDelma Damos, 95, of North Henderson died at 5:12 a.m. Feb. 20, 2017, at the Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg.

She was born July 17, 1921, in North Henderson, a daughter of Swan Harold and Anna Schwartz Tornquist. She married Theodore Damos on Dec. 19, 1948, in Waukegan. He preceded her in death on Feb. 27, 1998.

She also was preceded in death by one infant sister, Maxine Tornquist.

Surviving are two sons, Donn Damos of North Henderson and David (and Karen) Damos of Ingleside; one brother, John Tornquist of North Henderson; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She attended New Salem Elementary, Alexis High School, Illinois State University and Roosevelt University.

She taught in Alpha, Waukegan and Galesburg, where she retired as the principal of Churchill Junior High School. She helped set up curriculum at Daniel Webster Junior High in Waukegan, and was part of setting up education opportunities, under the University of Illinois, for returning veterans after World War II. She taught business classes to officers at Fort Sheridan and in Galesburg, started the first soccer program. During her years as a school administrator, some of her proudest moments were redirecting and counseling troubled youth.

In later years, she was active in North Henderson Methodist Church, Floral Club, PEO Chapter NK in Galesburg and educational groups.

Funeral services were held Saturday at North Henderson United Methodist Church. Cremation was accorded following the service with a private family burial in Mount Vernon Cemetery to be held at a later date. McGuire and Davies Funeral Home and Crematory in Monmouth is in charge of arrangements.
