Martha Davis

Martha DavisMartha Ellen Davis, 94, of Rushville died at 1:40 p.m. March 6, 2016, at the Rushville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born June 17, 1921, in Pontiac, the daughter of Edwin Russell and Irma Ross Smith. She married Harold E. Davis on June 6, 1943, in Saunemin. He preceded her in death on March 24, 2015.

Surviving are two daughters, Joyce (and Kenneth) Corbin and Marilyn (and Lyle) Sargent, both of Rushville; one brother, Alan (and Evelyn) Smith of Peoria; six grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Elaine Williams; and one brother, Sidney E. Smith.

She was a 1939 graduate of Saunemin High School and a 1943 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University with bachelor degrees in Music and English. She was an active member of Delta Omicron Music Sorority. During the time her husband was overseas during World War II, she taught music in Piper City. When her husband came home from the war in January of 1946, they set up housekeeping in Rushville.

In 1947, she started directing the choir at Rushville First Methodist Church for 21 years. She also gave private voice and piano lessons for 15 years before she began teaching freshman English at Rushville High School in 1961, which she did for 18 years, retiring in June 1979. She also was the FTA sponsor during those years.

She and her husband also owned and operated Rushville Roller Rink for over 10 years. She also was her husband’s secretary for his insurance business with Northwestern Mutual Life.

She was a member of Rushville First United Methodist Church and was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at her church. Burial will follow in Rushville City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville.
