Jimmy DerryJimmy L. Derry, 80, of Astoria died at 4:50 p.m. Feb. 6, 2016, at his home.

He was born July 26, 1935, in Vermont, the son of Floyd “Buck” and Ila English Derry. He married Linda Price on Oct. 23, 1954, in Astoria. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Jimmy (and Debbie) Derry of Summum and Joey Derry of Ocala, Fla.; three daughters, Tonya (and Tom) Stell and Tina (and Brad) Batterton, both of Astoria, and Tammy (and Billy) Tanner of Bloomington; two sisters, Joan (and Jack) Poppenhager of Canton and Diana Phillips of Coal Valley; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Donna Graham.

He was owner and operator of Derry Motors and Derry Truck Line in Astoria. He went on to work at Caterpillar District 121 for 10 years. He also was a coal minor for 20 years for the AMAX Coal Company at Sun Spot Mine and 10 years at the Wabash Underground Mine in Mount Carmel. He then worked construction for Operating Engineers Local 649 for nine years.

He was a member of United Mine Workers of America and Operating Engineers Local 649. He was a 50-year member of the Astoria and Vermont Masonic Lodge and the Ipava Order of the Eastern Star where he was a Past Master.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Pastor Gary Sheets officiating. Masonic services were conducted by the Vermont Masonic Lodge. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in Astoria.
