Orpheus "Sam" DavisOrpheus O. “Sam” Davis, 92, of Rushville died at 3:15 p.m. April 28, 2014, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

He was born July 1, 1921, in Camden, the son of Finis C. and Edith Cady Davis. He married Joan L. Trefiletti on June 5, 1950, in Rushville. She preceded him in death on Nov. 23, 1996. He later married Betty Esther on June 5, 1999, in Rushville. She survives.

Also surviving are one stepson, Joe (and Letha) Stambaugh of Astoria; and several nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Rushville High School, he served as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force during World War II from 1942-45. He was a trooper with Illinois State Police for 30 years, retiring in 1976. He then worked for Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office. He served eight years on Schuyler County Board.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as Trustee; Camden Masonic Lodge #648; Quincy Consistory; Schuyler American Legion Post #4; and Illinois Retired Police Association of Illinois.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at his church in Rushville with Reverend J. William Werner officiating. Burial will follow in Huntsville Cemetery with military rites by U.S. Air Force Burial Detail and Schuyler American Legion Post #4. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with masonic rites at 7 p.m.
