Donald DeanDonald R. Dean, 77, of Rushville died Oct. 28, 2013, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

He was born Oct. 30, 1935, in Schuyler County, son of Robert Franklin and Katie Eva Irene Whitaker Dean. He married Nancy Brown Workman on Sept. 14, 1974, in Havana. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Rhonda (and Mike) Howard of Rushville; three step children, Connie (and Jerry) Jones, Jeffrey (and Dana) Workman, both of Rushville and Michael (and Jan) Workman of Mount Carmel; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Warren and David Dean; and three sisters, Dorothy Johnson, Zelma Graham and Lena Rawson.

A 1953 graduate of Augusta High School, he served with the Air Force, during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

He first worked for Dennis Hatchery in Augusta, then Quillen Service Station in Rushville. He then worked for Schuyler Telephone, later Frontier Communications in Rushville retiring in October 1997. After his retirement, he worked at Scripps Park Golf Course in Rushville.

He was a firefighter with Rushville Fire Department for over 42 years having served as chief.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Schuyler American Legion Post #4, having participated in its burial detail and Rushville Moose Lodge #506.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with Reverend Steven Akins officiating. Burial will follow in Rushville City Cemetery with military rites by U.S. Air Force and Schuyler American Legion Post #4. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
