Harold DeWittHarold Lee “Squint” DeWitt, 70, of Beardstown died at 5 a.m. Aug. 8, 2009, at his residence.

He was born April 6, 1939, in Rushville, the son of Clarence E. and Beverly Steele DeWitt. He married Doris Jane Chockley on April 17, 1963, in Rushville. She preceded him in death on Nov. 18, 2001.

Surviving are one son, Douglas DeWitt of Beardstown; one daughter, Rebecca (and Jason) Elam of Beardstown; and two grandchildren.

He entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 31, 1963, serving in Europe until he was honorably discharged on June 15, 1964.

He graduated from Rushville High School in 1957, where he lettered in many sports.

He was employed by CIPS for 37 years retiring as gas foreman in 2001.

He was a member of Schuyler American Legion Post #4 and Scripps Park Caddy House Liar’s Club.

Services were held Tuesday at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Robert Schoolcraft officiating. Burial was in Rushville City Cemetery with military honors by U.S. Army Honors Detail and Schuyler American Post #4.

Memorials may be made to Beardstown Paramedics or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
