Ellis Danner, 94, of Sun City, Ariz., formerly of Astoria, died at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Sun Health Hospice in Peoria, Ariz.

He was born March 4, 1907, in Astoria, the son of Daniel T. and Bessie Ellis Huff Danner. He married Irene E. Schaefer on Aug. 31, 1940, in Pekin. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Gregory (and Bridget) of Urbana; two grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Danner of Canton.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

A World War II Army veteran, he retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1967. He was a member of the Reserve Officers Association of the U.S.

He was a highway construction engineer with the Illinois Division of Highways in Peoria from 1930 to 1946 and was professor of civil engineering at the University of Illinois from 1946 until retiring in 1974.

He served as director of the Illinois Engineering Council from 1947 to 1970. He served on the Champaign City Council from 1959 to 1965.

He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, American Road Builders Association, American Society of Civil Engineers and was listed in "Who's Who in the Midwest" and "Who's Who in Engineering."

He graduated from Western Illinois State Teachers College Academy in Macomb, with honors, as valedictorian and earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois in Urbana.

He was a member of Chi Epsilon, Sigma Tau, Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Pi.

He was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Peoria, Ariz.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church of the Brethren in Canton, where visitation will be one hour before. Rev. Kevin Kessler will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Canton. Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the University of Illinois Foundation.
